Steve McCollum

Stephen Owen McCollum, 66, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday afternoon, August 17, 2020 at his home.

Born June 21, 1954 in Arkansas City, Kansas, he was the son of Barton Owen and Betty June (Patterson) McCollum. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1972. Following high school, Stephen attended Southwestern College and received his bachelor’s degree. He received his master’s degree in Science education from Emporia State University. Stephen spent time in Dallas, Texas where he worked for Texas Instruments and the Dallas Airport. While working for the airport, he was instrumental in the computerization of the transport system. He returned to Winfield and taught Sciences at the Winfield High School.

He was united in marriage to Susan (Heitzenrater) Davis on September 14, 1984 at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. The couple taught in Washington State, Montana, and in multiple districts across Kansas before retiring to Winfield. Stephen was a great cook, an avid reader, and enjoyed woodworking and loved all things science.

His family includes his wife Susan McCollum of Winfield; his sisters, Robyn McCollum of Winfield; Linda Silvers and husband, Gene of Winfield; his brothers, Dee Jay McCollum and wife, Suzanne of Decatur, AL; Barton “Shorty” McCollum, Jr. of Pryor, OK; his step-father Charles Harris of Douglass; and many nieces and nephews.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Barton Owen McCollum and Betty June Harris, and a sister Monica June Pullman.

The family will hold memorial services at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Stephen’s name for the Winfield Food Pantry. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
